“Oh, Gieniek, it is a pity that you do not know what it means to return to your hometown. Only a kilometre's stretch remains before me. Nearly there, just behind those woods. You can once again hear the whispering of the pine trees, such a solemn whispering – as if they were trying to say something. You cannot understand anything as well as that rustling. The woods are getting thinner, and the lake is already glistening through the trees,” (letter to E. Morawski, Leipzig, 21/03/1902).

Many of Čiurlionis' paintings on the subject of nature were inspired by locations in his hometown, i.e., the natural surroundings of the Druskininkai environs. However, his landscapes are always generalized with the intention of portraying nature's states and moods instead of recreating the exact images before the painter.
