M.K. ČIURLIONIS (1875-1911) - a Lithuanian painter and composer to be discovered by Violeta COUTAZ (pianist, musicologist and teacher).

M.K. Ciurlionis (1875-1911) is a rare example of the mysterious links between the arts. This great artist left his mark on European art at the beginning of the 20th century, but he is unfortunately too little known, partly because he was born in the north of Europe and partly because his life was too short (36 years). He was both an excellent composer and a painter, a true pioneer of abstract art, as well as being part of the Symbolist movement. The titles of his paintings often refer to musical forms.

Violeta Coutaz has drawn on a wealth of high-quality documentation to help us discover the many facets of this deeply original musician.

The lecturer

Pianist, musicologist and translator Violeta Coutaz is a graduate of the Lithuanian and St Petersburg Conservatoires. She trained as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Music (London) and obtained a master's degree in musicology from the Université Lumière Lyon II. She taught chamber music for ten years at the CNSM in Lithuania and has performed in concerts in Lithuania, Russia, Panama, Cuba, Japan, England, Denmark and France. A musicologist, she is the author of studies on Shostakovich, Brahms, Taneïev and Čiurlionis, and is also co-author of a piano method, Hissons les voiles, published in 2022 by Éditions Buissonnières. She now combines a career as a teacher and concert performer. Based in Lyon, France, she teaches piano at the Dardilly music school and performs regularly in concerts.
