“Čiurlionis and Debussy” is a subtle musical journey in which one of Lithuania’s most prominent ensembles, the string quartet “Mettis,” and harpist Liucilė Vilimaitė will reveal the beauty of Lithuanian and European musical traditions.

Having joined forces for this concert program, these performers—beloved by audiences and acclaimed by critics—will treat the Vilnius audience to an evening tinged with romantic sentiment, featuring works of exceptional beauty. Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’ String Quartet in C minor is imbued with the spirit of Lithuanian identity and the nation’s fundamental creative heritage, while Claude Debussy’s works—the String Quartet in G minor and “Sacred and Secular Dances”—embody the lightness and refinement of French Impressionism. Arnold Bax’s Quintet for Harp and String Quartet, featured in the program and brimming with romantic expression and rich texture, will add the colors of British music to the concert.

PROGRAM:

Mikalojus Konstantinas ČIURLIONIS (1875–1911)

String Quartet in C minor, VL 83

Claude DEBUSSY (1862–1918)

String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10

“Danse sacrée et danse profane” (“Sacred and Profane Dances”) for harp and strings

Arnold BAX (1883–1953)

Quintet for harp and strings, GP 214

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

“Mettis” is a concept from Greek mythology associated with wisdom, ingenuity, and skill, from which the common term denoting quality-based ingenuity and mastery was derived.

It is no coincidence that one of the youngest and, at the same time, most prominent string quartets in Lithuania chose this name—the four musicians who make up the ensemble—violinists Kostas Tumosa and Bernardas Petrauskas, violist Tomas Petrikis, and cellist Rokas Vaitkevičius—perfectly embody these qualities.

Another distinctive feature of the quartet is its commitment to continuous improvement, participation in international master classes, and deepening their knowledge under the guidance of the world’s top professionals. This, combined with the prizes they have won at prestigious chamber music competitions, has elevated “Mettis” to the ranks of Lithuania’s finest classical music ensembles.
