This lecture explores the world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries — a time of major scientific breakthroughs and upheavals. It was the meeting point of two eras, during which the most renowned Lithuanian artist, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, was born, lived, created, and flashed across the cultural sky like a comet.

The period is well known for its achievements in medicine, chemistry, industry, the spread of electricity and telephone networks. But no less of a revolution took place in astronomy: new instruments allowed humanity to look into the Universe in greater detail than ever before, prompting a shift in thinking comparable to the invention of the telescope three centuries earlier.

Dr. Kastytis Zubovas, a senior researcher at Vilnius University’s Center for Physical and Technological Sciences, is an astrophysicist who studies black holes and galaxy evolution. He is also an avid science popularizer, science fiction enthusiast, and event organizer. Notably, Dr. Zubovas is a great-grandson of M. K. Čiurlionis.

In his talk, Dr. Zubovas will highlight two key turning points in the history of astronomy: the discovery of what stars are made of and the first insights into the true scale of the Universe.

“The best thing I can give to society is to share stories about what I and other astrophysicists discover,” says Dr. Zubovas.

The lecture is free of charge, supported by the Druskininkai Rotary Club, and is part of the “Druskininkai – Lithuanian Capital of Culture 2025” programme.
