To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society invite audiences to a series of celebratory concerts featuring works created in dialogue with Čiurlionis’s artistic legacy.

As part of the original music project Continuing Čiurlionis, audiences will hear new works by contemporary composers based on the principles of stylization and recomposition. A key highlight is the premiere of composer Lukas Butkus’s Concerto for Piano and Symphony Orchestra “Zodiac”, inspired by Čiurlionis’s painting cycle of the same name and reworking motifs from his Fugue in B minor. This twelve-part composition will be performed for the first time at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall.

Continuing Čiurlionis is the first project of its kind in Lithuania – a theoretical and practical study in musical style composition that encourages young creators to engage with Čiurlionis’s heritage in search of contemporary musical forms.

The concert program will also include Čiurlionis’s symphonic poem “The Sea”, two nocturnes arranged by Jievaras Jasinskis (No. 1 in F-sharp minor for cello and orchestra, No. 2 in C-sharp minor for violin and orchestra), and the first movement of Carl Reinecke’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. All featured works are connected to Čiurlionis’s musical world or the artistic environment in which he lived and created.
