The mission of the annual BandFest Kaunas is not only to bring together wind orchestras, but also to develop friendship on the basis of exchange, ideas, and cooperation in projects. Such friendship connects the Kaunas Wind Orchestra “Ąžuolynas” (chief conductor Giedrius Vaznys) and the Palanga Orchestra, led and conducted by Vygantas Rekašius.

The Orchestra “Ąžuolynas” is a regular participant in the “Amber Wind” festival organized by the Palanga Orchestra, and during the summer performs in the concert series “Orchestra's Summer”. In the meantime, the Palanga Orchestra delights Kaunas residents at the Bandfest festival and Park music events.

On August 24, we will hear and see the Palanga Orchestra again, bringing a piece of the seaside resort's history to Kaunas: a concert from the traditional "Orchestra's Summer" cycle and the programme "Murmurs of Čiurlionis", celebrating the creative and personal time of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis in Palanga.

The Palanga Orchestra is a professional wind orchestra, one of the most important creators of the cultural identity of the city of Palanga. The collective pays special attention to the quality, diversity of its concert programmes, and the representation of the city of Palanga. The Palanga Orchestra, which has been performing in the resort since 1953, annually plays in the tradition of orchestral music concerts in Palanga parks. The tradition, started and cherished by Counts Tiškevičius, has been counting its second century. It is symbolic that in 2025 the name of one of the most prominent Lithuanian artists – M. K. Čiurlionis – is also found in this deep and significant tradition. History testifies that M. K. Čiurlionis performed at the resort in his youth with the Mykolas Oginskis Orchestra. Later, in the summer of 1908, he spent one of the most beautiful periods of his life at the resort together with his future wife, the writer Sofija Kymantaitė – their communication and creative dialogue gained special depth at that time in Palanga.

In the programme “Murmurs of Čiurlionis” listeners will experience a subtle synthesis between history and music. M. K. Čiurlionis’ own works for wind orchestra will be performed, as well as completely new works by Lithuanian composers inspired by Čiurlionis. Listeners will also hear compositions by world-famous Čiurlionis' contemporaries and music that M. K. Čiurlionis himself performed with the orchestra in Palanga. Authentic sounds and stories enriched with historical facts will allow you to rediscover Čiurlionis not only as a brilliant composer and artist, but also as an orchestrator, flutist, a person who loved and created in Palanga.
