At this exhibition, visitors are invited to look at M. K. Čiurlionis’ paintings from a new perspective—through the lens of words and texts inspired by the artist’s creations. Here, the most beautiful verses of Lithuanian poetesses intertwine with artistic readings by actors, turning every visitor into an active, thoughtful, and sensitive listener and observer.

In this anniversary year celebrating the artist and composer M. K. Čiurlionis, all eyes turn to his enchanting, unique world—a world that transports us elsewhere. We choose to view it from a slightly different angle—through words and texts inspired by his paintings. For this story about a meeting of artists from different disciplines, we chose three poetesses: Salomėja Nėris, Janina Degutytė, and Judita Vaičiūnaitė. In their collections, we find more than one poem inspired by Čiurlionis, proving just how profound his influence was.

Poet and journalist Danas Pumputis recalled visiting Čiurlionis’ art gallery with S. Nėris in 1939:

“Then she approached ‘The Archer.’ I didn’t check the time exactly, but it seemed to me that she stood in front of that painting for more than half an hour. I suspected she was composing a poem, though I didn’t see her write anything down. She stood there as if rooted to the spot. Her face radiated the most delicate warmth—something only true admiration can bring forth.”

Such a merging of two personalities—the artist and the poetess—leads to something new and unexpected. The poetesses wove their emotions, thoughts, and personal colors into Čiurlionis’ images. When actress Kristina Švenčionytė and interdisciplinary artist Artūras Ustinovas joined this project, the exhibition space expanded even further.

We invite you to become active, thoughtful, and sensitive listeners and observers, so that the artists’ creativity may resonate within your own soul.
