Sonata II (Sonata of the Spring)

These are the images of a Lithuanian spring portrayed according to the main structural principles of the “Sonata” series. “Allegro” depicts planes of melting snow rising in parallel and revealing distant spaces from another world through holes in their cliff faces. The four layers arranged at different levels create a polyphony that, in the form of a sonata, would be the exposition and reprise united in their thematic variations.

The distant forest on the horizon, the mountains of clouds and the massive sails of the windmill break up the area of the painting and create the serene and monumental composition of “Andante”. The dynamic diagonal of “Scherzo”, with its giant fish trying to escape the nets bring the feeling of urgency, whereas the sparingly painted but impressive “Finale” depicting a planet thrusting its highest summits above the clouds, metaphorically reiterates the old man's words in Čiurlionis' fairytale: “Watch from towers high above...”
