The long-standing tradition of the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts Symphony Orchestra – its annual spring concert at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic – takes on special meaning this year. The event marks a double celebration: the 80th anniversary of the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts and the 150th birth anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.

“As the Philharmonic embarks on its 84th season, we are filled with exciting concert plans, ideas for expanding cooperation with various cultural and diplomatic institutions, new educational initiatives, and strong incentives to join international cultural projects across Lithuania. One of these is the commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis – a celebrated Lithuanian composer and painter, and a cultural ambassador to the world,” says Rūta Prusevičienė, General Director of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society.

To mark the occasion, the Philharmonic has prepared a diverse program of events – from grand symphonic evenings to playful chamber music concerts. One of them is this very symphonic concert.

On this special evening, the stage will be graced by some of the most talented young musicians of the younger generation. The program will combine original works by Čiurlionis and their contemporary reinterpretations, alongside 20th-century classics and modern compositions. The audience will hear the symphonic poem “In the Forest”, a Triptych for Piano and Orchestra by Vytautas Landsbergis and Viktoras Barsov based on Čiurlionis’s music, and the Waltz from “The Creation of the World”, arranged by composer Arvydas Malcys. The program also features Emmanuel Séjourné’s concerto for marimba and string orchestra, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s tuba concerto, Carl Reinecke’s harp concerto, and a virtuosic Franz Waxman fantasy for violin and orchestra based on Bizet’s Carmen.
