On 25th of October, 1987 the founding meeting of the Čiurlionis Society was held at the M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum (Kaunas). During this meeting the Chairman of the Society, Prof. Vytautas Landsbergis, was elected, the Deputy Chairman - Milda Mildažytė-Kulikauskienė, the Secretary - R. Bukaveckienė.

Since its foundation, the Society has planned the following activities:

research, popularisation and dissemination of the works of M. K. Čiurlionis;
preservation and care of memorial sites.

On 24 September 1995, the Čiurlionis House was officially opened, and on 15 December of the same year, the Council of the Čiurlionis Society made a decision to establish the centre of the Society in the Čiurlionis House in Vilnius, and to establish a branch of the Society in Kaunas. This decision was approved at the end of April 1996 at the general meeting of the Čiurlionis Society.
